Local Sensory and Special Needs-Friendly Activities

sensory friendly activities in charleston

Traditional family outings can sometimes feel overwhelming and daunting for those of us affected by sensory and special needs. Thankfully, there are many options for inclusive activities in the Lowcountry- the town of Mount Pleasant recently being our first “certified” Autism Friendly Town. Whether its accommodations at town wide events, or specific hours and days just for those with special needs, there are many ways to enjoy classic kid activities here in the Charleston area.

Here are some of our favorites:

The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry - CML SuperStars : The Children’s Museum located in downtown Charleston is open from 10 am- 12pm on the second and fourth Sunday of each month exclusively for children with special needs. Children and their families are able to explore the museum free from overstimulation, and the price of admission is FREE.

Sky Zone - Sensory Hours : SkyZone offers sensory hours in which we can enjoy the freedom of jumping in a quieter, toned-down jumping experience for those with special needs. Check local calendars, as times and availability may vary.

South Carolina Aquarium - Sensory Inclusion : South Carolina Aquarium is the first organization in South Carolina to be certified by KultureCity as a sensory-inclusive establishment. Sensory inclusive resources available includes Sensory Bags, Special Maps, Weighted Lap Pads for check out and more. Expedited entry can also be arranged by calling or (843) 577-3474 (FISH).

Tapio All In Gym: An all inclusive program that meet twice a month. From their site: “Our All-Inclusive program is a goal-oriented class for children ages 3 to 18 with various abilities and strengths. We believe everyone can be ALL IN with gymnastics. The program focuses on improving balance, strength, gross motor skills, and confidence through gymnastics training and instruction. At the Tapio School of Dance, we believe that all populations can benefit from practicing gymnastics and building a mind/body connection.”

Brunch at Belle Station : Eloping can be a daunting character trait of kiddos on the spectrum. Belle Station in Mount Pleasant offers the security of an outdoor dining area completely gated in. They also typically provide live music and kid friendly activities on weekends, including bounce houses, fairy hair and more. Check their instagram for special events.
